Vertical Garden

Dear fellow citizens,
On August 18, 2018, with the presence of our fellow citizens and the media, “Our Vertical Garden” was officially opened, a project implemented as a part of the microgranting call of the “Novi Sad 2021” Foundation for the public spaces, at the corner of Dr Svetislav Kasapinovic and Cankar Street in Detelinara in Novi Sad. During the program we talked about the role and importance of the vertical garden, and our fellow citizens had the opportunity to personally plant the plant and thus contribute to this event.

What is the role of “Our Vertical Garden”?

The positive role of the vertical garden is reflected in the thermoregulation and reduction of air pollution, but also the reduction of noise and heat island effect – increasing the average air temperature in urban areas in relation to the environment, absorbing atmospheric sediment, which can be used as a natural habitat for birds and insects. Vertical gardens, in many ways, have a positive effect on the urban environment and the people living there. They primarily enrich the air with oxygen, purify the air from pollutants and allergens, increase the humidity, lower the ambient temperature, and thus create their own specific microclimate.

Where did the idea for the project came from?

This project started with the vision that the citizens of Novi Sad, Detelinara, have an innovative green corner, which is completely SELF-SUSTAINABLE (at the top of the vertical garden there is a canister that collects rain water and drips water to the seedlings by the system) for gathering people who appreciate and love beauty, that have no place where they can cultivate, care for or water the plants in a SUSTAINABLE way.

How do we see the future of “Our Vertical Garden”?

We hope that “Our Vertical Garden” will truly be OUR, YOUR and mutual, so that people around it will socialize, raise awareness of ecology and share experiences of growing plants. We firmly believe that together we will, through our miniature efforts, be able to preserve a new green place in the City, our European Capital of Culture in 2021!

We will do our best to organize “Our Vertical Gardens” landscaping activities once a month, but we rely on the fellow citizens of Detelinara, who will be looking after their new garden every day :)!
