The project “Young people are the bearers of solutions to environmental problems” is implemented by the Ecological Association “Green Seed” and financed by the Ministry of Tourism and Youth of the Republic of Serbia.

Sombor

Sombor and ecology

The city of Sombor, despite being recognized for its ecological initiatives, faces significant challenges with illegal dumpsites. These unregulated dumps not only spoil the visual appeal of the city but also have a serious negative impact on the environment. In recent years, the city has taken concrete steps to address this problem. Illegal dumps in the settlements of Kolut, Gakovo, and Svetozar Miletić have been removed, reducing the number of dumpsites in suburban and rural areas. Plans are also underway to build a Regional Waste Management Center in Rančevo, which will serve five municipalities, including Sombor. The goal of this center is to close existing dumpsites and increase the recycling rate of municipal waste.

However, illegal dumpsites remain an issue. The Public Utility Company “Čistoća” Sombor regularly removes these dumpsites from various locations in the city, but it is crucial that all citizens take responsibility and prevent their reappearance. Despite all efforts, illegal dumpsites continue to be a serious environmental problem in Sombor, degrading the surroundings and negatively impacting the environment. It is therefore essential for all citizens to understand the importance of proper waste disposal and actively contribute to preserving the ecological balance in their city.

Workshop

Sombor high school students may live in a city known for its clean streets and tidy parks, but that doesn’t stop them from enthusiastically discussing environmental issues! While it may seem that Sombor doesn’t face many challenges at first glance, these students quickly noticed that there is still room for improvement. When it comes to recycling, they have already devised several creative ways to motivate their peers, primarily to continue collecting bottle caps and thus unite two humanitarian goals. We’re here to make a change, step by step, and judging by their enthusiasm – that change won’t take long to arrive!

During the workshops, the students were given a task – to create a creative video where they chose one environmental problem in their city that bothers them the most and explained the best way we could solve it! Joint working meeting

Since one of the project’s priorities was connecting young people with a desire for activism, a joint working meeting was organized at our Green Co-working Center for this purpose. All the best teams gathered there, along with their peers from other cities and our expert team, to discuss solutions to environmental problems. During this meeting, the youth shared innovative ideas, exchanged experiences with their peers, and discussed opportunities for joint collaboration to address environmental issues in their communities, as most of these environmental problems are not isolated but shared among many of the participating cities.

The collaborative meeting sparked active discussions among the students about the problems in their communities. They shared their impressions and observations about the state of the environment in their cities, focusing on specific issues such as improper waste disposal, air pollution, and the lack of green spaces. Most students expressed a desire to contribute to their communities through education, organizing environmental actions, and involving the community.
